Ironically, Groningen had also just beaten PSV in their previous home game.

“Both teams had to do a thorough selection process last summer and are still in the building phase with a new team,” Brood writes. “We had to come from far away. Last weekend we beat a top club, just like Groningen did earlier. That gives confidence.” It was a battle of the sub-top overachievers, a testament to excellent provincial scouting and coaching defying the financial dominance of the traditional big three.

A Look into the Future

While Ruud Brood accurately identified the parallels between the two clubs in November 2013, their paths would diverge in the most dramatic and tragic way imaginable by the end of the season. While FC Groningen used this momentum to secure a stable European playoff spot and build toward future cup glory, Roda JC experienced a catastrophic collapse. Despite this brilliant autumn run, the Kerkrade-based club plummeted down the table in the spring and was shockingly relegated to the Eerste Divisie at the end of the 2013/2014 campaign.
