The Matchday Diet: FEBO, Krokets, and the Wall of Snacks

If you want to understand Dutch football culture, you must first understand the Dutch matchday diet. It is a culinary tradition built on deep-fried convenience and unapologetic comfort. Page 31 of the September 2013 FC Groningen programme captures this perfectly with a vibrant, full-page advertisement for FEBO, the iconic Dutch fast-food chain.

The ad features a woman happily biting into a bright orange, perfectly cylindrical kroket, accompanied by the bold claim: “FEBO de lekkerste…!” (FEBO the tastiest…!). It proudly states that a FEBO kroket is made fresh daily and is never frozen. But the most important detail for the local fan is the address printed at the bottom: Vismarkt 1.

For generations of Groningen supporters, the FEBO on the Vismarkt has been a sacred pre-match or post-match destination. The concept of pulling a hot snack out of a coin-operated glass wall (de muur) is a uniquely Dutch phenomenon. Whether celebrating a thrilling victory over Ajax or drowning the sorrows of a bitter defeat, a quick stop at the Vismarkt for a kroket or a frikandel is a ritual as deeply ingrained in the fan experience as wearing a green-and-white scarf. Advertising it in the matchday booklet is a direct appeal to the fans’ most primal, comforting matchday habits.

A Look into the Future

Despite the rise of healthy eating trends, vegan alternatives, and boutique food halls over the last decade, the cultural dominance of the deep-fried snack remains unshaken in Dutch football. By 2026, FEBO continues to be a national institution. The location at Vismarkt 1 still stands as a beacon for late-night revelers and hungry football fans alike. This 2013 advertisement is a colorful, mouth-watering reminder that while players, managers, and stadium infrastructures may change, the comforting crunch of a matchday kroket is eternal.
