The Academy Report Card: From Struggles to Silverware

Page 17 of the May 2014 matchday programme serves as the ultimate end-of-year report card for the entire FC Groningen youth academy. Reading through the updates from the A1 (Under-19s) down to the D2 (Under-12s) provides a fascinating look at the fluctuating fortunes across different age groups at the Corpus den Hoorn training complex.

The older age groups were facing severe challenges. The A1 team, still reeling from the tragic passing of their teammate Reinier de Groene, finished 8th or 9th. The B1 team was fighting to avoid relegation playoffs. However, the text highlights an incredible display of resilience from the B2 squad. After spending most of the season dead last, they staged an “impressive catch-up race” to finish 6th, just behind champions Feyenoord.

But the brightest news came from the absolute youngest players in the academy. The “FC GRONINGEN D2” block announces that the team, managed by trainer Bote Talsma, needed only one single point in their upcoming Saturday match against city rivals Be Quick 1887 to be crowned champions of the Tweede Divisie F. It is a beautiful reminder that while the older academy players face the crushing, cynical pressure of professional contracts, the youngest boys are still experiencing the pure, unadulterated joy of lifting a trophy.

A Look into the Future

Tracking the progress of an entire academy vertical shows how difficult talent development truly is. A championship at the D2 (Under-12) level guarantees absolutely nothing about a player’s future professional prospects. By 2026, the vast majority of the boys mentioned across this page have left the sport entirely. However, the structured, competitive environment documented here—teaching kids how to fight relegation in the B1 or handle title pressure in the D2—remains the gold standard for FC Groningen‘s youth development, ensuring that the few who do survive the filter are mentally prepared for the Euroborg.
