De Warming Up: Erwin van de Looi Demands Efficiency Ahead of ADO Clash

February 2015 had been a harsh reality check for FC Groningen. After a highly successful January, the team managed only two points from four matches, slipping into the right half of the table. In his traditional De Warming Up column ahead of the match against ADO Den Haag, head coach Erwin van de Looi delivered a clear and uncompromising message: it was time to rediscover their clinical edge.

Reflecting on recent setbacks—a 3-1 away loss to Heerenveen and a frustrating 3-0 home defeat to AZ Alkmaar—Van de Looi emphasized that the team’s fighting spirit was not the issue. The problem was taking their chances. “We didn’t reward ourselves enough,” he noted about the Frisian derby, urging his squad to maintain their intensity while dramatically improving their finishing in front of the home crowd at the Euroborg.

The pressure was mounting to secure a spot in the top seven for the European playoffs. Yet, Van de Looi remained visibly confident in his winter reinforcements, hoping the new blood would provide the necessary spark to break the negative streak and turn the Euroborg back into a fortress.

A Look into the Future

Van de Looi’s demand for efficiency would soon pay off in the most spectacular way possible. While the league campaign had its ups and downs, the team found its ultimate clinical edge in the KNVB Cup. Just two months after this column, Erwin van de Looi would lead FC Groningen to their first-ever major trophy, cementing his status as a legendary figure in the club’s history before moving on to manage Willem II and the Dutch U21 national team.
