One of the most fascinating aspects of the Dutch economy is its incredible level of niche specialization. A perfect example is found in the top left of the advertising grid on page 35: Kitbedrijf Aldeko Groningen.
In many countries, applying sealant (kit) around windows, bathrooms, or facades is just a minor task done by a general carpenter or painter. In the Netherlands, it is a dedicated, highly specialized profession. Aldeko, led by director Mindert Ruitenbeek, proudly advertises 30 years of experience solely in “hoogwaardige afdichtingssystemen” (high-quality sealing systems). The ad boldly states: “No building can do without a good joint seal.” By advertising in the FC Groningen programme, Aldeko was targeting the major real estate developers and construction firm owners in the sponsor lounges, reminding them that a multi-million-euro building project can be ruined by a poorly sealed window.

A Look into the Future
By 2026, the highly specialized skills of companies like Aldeko became unexpectedly critical in the Groningen region. As the province embarked on the massive “versterkingsoperatie” (reinforcement operation) to make thousands of homes and buildings earthquake-resistant due to gas extraction damage, the demand for flexible, high-tech sealants skyrocketed. Buildings needed to be able to move and flex without cracking, making the exact science of joint sealing a vital component of seismic engineering. The niche craftsmen who advertised their services at the football club in 2013 found themselves playing a crucial role in physically securing the future of the province.
