Surviving the Drop: Groningen Enters the Eredivisie Top 10

Football is a zero-sum game; one club’s tragedy is often another club’s statistical triumph. Throughout our archival review of the 2013/2014 season, we read guest columns from managers of struggling teams like Roda JC Kerkrade and NEC Nijmegen. By the time the playoff final rolled around in May, both of those historic clubs had suffered the ultimate nightmare: relegation from the Eredivisie. Page 13 of the FC Groningen matchday programme documents the immediate structural consequence of their demise.

Under the headline “FC GRONINGEN IN TOP-10”, the editors published a fascinating table tracking the longest uninterrupted stays in the Dutch top flight. “After the relegation of Roda JC Kerkrade and NEC, FC Groningen has joined the company of ten clubs that have played uninterruptedly in the Eredivisie for the longest time,” the text proudly announces.

The table shows the untouchable traditional top three (Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord) who have been there since 1956. But sitting at number 10 is FC Groningen, whose current uninterrupted run began in the year 2000. Seeing Roda JC (1973) and NEC (1994) crossed out with an asterisk is a brutal visual reminder of how quickly decades of stability can vanish. For Groningen, entering this Top 10 was a massive administrative milestone, proving that the club had successfully transitioned from a volatile “yo-yo” team in the 1990s into a structural pillar of the modern Eredivisie.

A Look into the Future

The pride of being in this Top 10 list makes the events of the following decade even more poignant. FC Groningen maintained their unbroken Eredivisie streak for many more years, building a reputation as a fiercely stable sub-top club. However, the unforgiving nature of football eventually caught up with them as well. In 2023, the unthinkable happened, and the Pride of the North suffered a shocking relegation, resetting their “uninterrupted” counter back to zero. Looking at this 2014 table is a stark reminder that in football, survival is never guaranteed, and every consecutive year in the top flight is a privilege that must be fiercely defended.
