A Guard of Honor in Urk: Remembering Reinier de Groene

In the opening pages of the May 2014 matchday programme, first-team manager Erwin van de Looi briefly mentioned the devastating loss of a youth academy player. On page 48, the club dedicates a full section to honor him properly, providing the heartbreaking details of a tragedy that paralyzed the FC Groningen family.

The page serves as a memorial for 18-year-old Reinier de Groene, a player for the FC Groningen A1 (Under-19) squad managed by former international Peter Hoekstra. The text explains that Reinier had only joined the club the previous summer, transferring from amateur side SV Urk to chase his professional dreams in the north. His sudden death from cardiac arrest left his teammates and coaches in a state of profound shock.

The programme details the immediate, deeply human response of the club. All youth matches that weekend began with a minute of silence, and the players wore black armbands. The matches for the A1 and B1 squads were entirely cancelled. But the most poignant detail is the description of the funeral: “The selection and staff of FC Groningen A1 were present on Saturday morning at the funeral of Reinier de Groene in Urk. The teammates of Reinier formed a guard of honor at the start of the memorial service.” It is a stark, sobering reminder that behind the elite athletic development, an academy is ultimately a brotherhood of young boys.

A Look into the Future

The tragic passing of Reinier de Groene remains one of the saddest chapters in the modern history of the club’s academy at Corpus den Hoorn. The boys who stood in that guard of honor in SV Urk had to process an unimaginable loss at a very young age. While some of those teammates eventually made it to the Euroborg pitch and others moved into civilian life, the memory of their fallen friend undoubtedly stayed with them. This printed page stands as a permanent, respectful monument to a young talent whose journey ended far too soon.
