A matchday programme is a snapshot of the local economy, but sometimes, the passage of time turns a simple advertisement into a piece of dark, unintentional comedy. If you look at the bottom of page 12 in the October 2014 edition, you will find an ad for Domica, a local real estate and rental agency, featuring a branded Fiat 500.
The slogan printed above the car reads: “Binnen 24 uur een droomwoning” (A dream home within 24 hours). In the autumn of 2014, the Dutch housing market was just beginning to recover from the global financial crisis. Finding an affordable rental apartment in a student city like the one surrounding the Euroborg was competitive, but it was still within the realm of possibility. An agency could confidently promise a quick turnaround to attract clients.

Reading this slogan today feels like reading science fiction. It perfectly encapsulates how drastically the socio-economic reality of the country has shifted in just over a decade.
A Look into the Future
By 2026, the Netherlands is in the grip of a historic, paralyzing housing crisis (wooncrisis). There is a massive shortage of homes, skyrocketing rents, and years-long waiting lists for social housing. Students and young professionals in the city often spend months, if not years, desperately searching for even a basic room, let alone a “dream home.” If an agency printed the slogan “A dream home within 24 hours” in a modern matchday programme, they would likely be accused of false advertising or cruel mockery. This small, colorful ad from 2014 stands as a nostalgic monument to a time when the housing market actually functioned.
