You couldn’t write a better script for a debut if you tried. In the August 2014 matchday programme for the first home game of the season against Heracles Almelo, the “De Hoofdrolspeler” feature focused on a man who had just delivered one of the most spectacular opening-day performances in FC Groningen history: Jarchinio Antonia.
The rapid winger had just transferred from Go Ahead Eagles. As fate would have it, the fixture list dictated that his very first official match for Groningen would be an away game in Deventer, against his former employers. Antonia reveals in the interview that the moment the schedule was released, he received a text from his brother: “Guess who you start against?”
The match itself was pure theater. Groningen found themselves 2-0 down, but mounted a furious comeback to win 3-2. Antonia was the absolute architect of the destruction of his old club, providing two assists and scoring the winning goal. The irony? The winning goal was a header. “The mere 169-centimeter measuring Antonia provided the winning goal with a header,” the interviewer notes. Antonia laughs it off: “The last time I scored with my head, I was playing for the youth team of Roda JC… Coincidentally, that was also a diving header, maybe that is my specialty, haha.”
A Look into the Future
By 2026, Jarchinio Antonia is remembered as the ultimate impact player of the 2014/2015 season. His blistering pace and unpredictable dribbling terrified Eredivisie defenses. That dream debut in Deventer set the tone for a campaign where he would play a vital role in securing the KNVB Cup. While his career later took him on a nomadic journey through Cyprus (winning trophies with Omonia Nicosia), Cambuur, and NAC Breda, for the fans at the Euroborg, he will always be the 169cm giant who announced his arrival with a flying header against his old friends.
