“We Are in a Similar Situation”: The Ironic Crossroads of Groningen and Twente in 2015

Football managers are often forced to be diplomats, spinning narratives to protect their squads from off-pitch turmoil. In the matchday programme for FC Groningen’s clash against FC Twente on March 22, 2015, Twente’s manager Alfred Schreuder delivered a masterclass in putting a brave face on a crumbling empire.

At the time, the Enschede club was embroiled in a severe financial crisis. The situation had just culminated in a three-point deduction by the KNVB, a heavy blow for a team that, only weeks prior, was dreaming of European football. “We as a coaching staff have tried to keep the playing group away from these problems as much as possible,” Schreuder admitted in his interview. “But ultimately, everyone in and around the club notices a lot of the situation.” Despite a painful six-match winless streak, Schreuder remained optimistic, pointing to their upcoming KNVB Cup semi-final against PEC Zwolle.

Looking for a silver lining, Schreuder drew a direct parallel between the visitors and their hosts. Groningen and Twente are in a similar situation,” he claimed. And on paper, he was right. FC Groningen was also gearing up for a Cup semi-final and fighting for a top-half finish. Schreuder praised the talent of Tjaronn Chery and Albert Rusnák, anticipating an open, attacking match between two teams with identical seasonal goals. But history would soon prove that their situations were anything but similar.

A Look into the Future

Schreuder’s quote remains one of the most fascinating examples of historical irony in Dutch football. While both clubs indeed played their respective Cup semi-finals in April 2015, their trajectories violently diverged. FC Groningen went on to win the KNVB Beker, securing the first major trophy in the club’s history and cementing that squad’s legendary status. FC Twente, on the other hand, was crushed under the weight of its financial mismanagement, eventually suffering a dramatic relegation in 2018. While Twente would eventually rebuild and return to the top of Dutch football in the 2020s, that spring afternoon in 2015 marked the exact moment two proud clubs passed each other heading in entirely opposite directions.
