Revenge on the Mind: Van de Looi Targets Cambuur

As the 2013/2014 Eredivisie season entered its crucial spring phase, FC Groningen manager Erwin van de Looi used his March 2nd matchday column to set a tone of relentless ambition. Writing ahead of the northern clash against SC Cambuur, Van de Looi reflected on a highly successful, albeit tense, string of recent results that had stabilized the club’s position in the sub-top of the league.

“After the first home victory of 2014 in the Home match vs Go Ahead Eagles 2014 (1-0), FC Groningen had chances to win again away at FC Utrecht,” Van de Looi writes, referencing the hard-fought Away match vs FC Utrecht 2014 which ended in a 1-0 victory for the Pride of the North. He praises his team’s defensive solidity, noting that keeping clean sheets ensures that a single goal is enough to secure three points. However, his focus quickly shifts to the immediate opponent, SC Cambuur, a team filled with familiar faces, including former Groningen manager Dwight Lodeweges and Groningen loanee Paco van Moorsel.

But beyond the friendly reunions, Van de Looi makes it clear that this match is about settling a score. He explicitly references the painful Away match vs SC Cambuur 2013 from earlier in the season, where Groningen suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat in Leeuwarden. “At the start of this season, we lost in Leeuwarden, and regarding that, we still have something to put right,” he declares. It is a classic managerial tactic: using a past humiliation to fuel the fire for a home derby, demanding that his players fight for every meter of the Euroborg grass.

A Look into the Future

Van de Looi’s demand to “put things right” was a testament to the growing mental resilience of his squad. The team that had been blown away in Leeuwarden months prior was now a much more cynical, defensively sound unit. This ability to learn from past away defeats and exact revenge on home soil became a hallmark of Van de Looi’s tenure. The players he called upon to fight for every meter would eventually use that exact same grit to conquer the KNVB Cup a year later.
