“Looking Forward to the Euroborg”: Simon Tibbling’s Prophetic Arrival

In January 2015, FC Groningen introduced a player who would quickly become the beating heart of their midfield and an absolute fan favorite. The matchday programme against FC Utrecht featured a massive multi-page spread dedicated to 20-year-old Swedish arrival Simon Tibbling. Fresh off his Eredivisie debut against Ajax at the Amsterdam ArenA, Tibbling sat down for a warm lunch and an extensive interview that, in hindsight, reads like a prophecy of the glory that was about to unfold.

Tibbling spoke candidly about the immediate step up in quality. “The way of training here at FC Groningen is still more intensive than I was used to in Sweden,” he noted, explaining how the tactical demands and heavier physical load required rapid adaptation. Fortunately, he wasn’t alone. He highlighted the importance of the winter training camp in Spain alongside fellow newcomer Albert Rusnák, and the crucial off-pitch support from his Swedish compatriot Dino Islamović, who helped him navigate the city and settle into an apartment conveniently close to the Euroborg.

The interview is packed with fascinating historical foreshadowing. Tibbling expressed his burning desire to win trophies, revealing a deep sporting trauma: “Last year we were in the cup final with Djurgårdens IF against IFK Göteborg. It was a drama, because we lost on penalties.” He also spoke passionately about his ambitions with the Swedish U21 team (Jong Zweden), noting their qualification for the upcoming European Championship in the Czech Republic and their dream of reaching the 2016 Rio Olympics. Before stepping onto the pitch for his home debut, he recalled secretly attending the Northern Derby against sc Heerenveen in December alongside former Groningen defender Fredrik Stenman, mesmerized by the atmosphere. “I am really looking forward to making my home debut,” he concluded.

A Look into the Future

Reading this interview from the perspective of 2026 is pure magic. The young Swede who lamented losing a cup final on penalties would, just four months later, orchestrate the midfield as FC Groningen won the 2014/15 KNVB Cup—the first major trophy in the club’s history. But the fairytale didn’t stop there. That summer, Tibbling went to the U21 European Championship in the Czech Republic, scored a crucial late equalizer against Portugal in the group stage, and eventually won the entire tournament with Sweden, securing that ticket to the Rio Olympics. Tibbling’s time in Groningen was a period of absolute triumph, and this January 2015 interview captures the exact moment the fuse was lit.
