For 23-year-old Johan Kappelhof, the 2013/2014 season marked exactly this kind of transformation. “I have never made a secret of the fact that I have a preference for the center-back position,” the Amsterdam-born defender admits. Partnered with the Brazilian rock Eric Botteghin, Kappelhof found his true calling. “The cooperation with Eric is fine. The communication with the goalkeeper and the two full-backs is also getting better.” This new central pairing was the exact reason manager Erwin van de Looi was finally able to establish the defensive stability he had been searching for all autumn.
