Fifteen Minutes of Fame: The Beautiful Romance of a Single Appearance

In the bottom right corner of page 25, under the header “VERJAARDAG” (Birthday), lies one of the most touching and romantic pieces of football trivia you will ever find in a matchday programme. The editors dedicated a small paragraph and a retro photograph to wish former player Herman Dieterman a happy 52nd birthday.

What makes Dieterman’s story so captivating is the brevity of his professional career. The text notes: “He made his appearance in the main squad exactly once in 1982. That was in the home match of FC Groningen against HFC Haarlem on September 5 of that year (2-2). He came on for fifteen minutes.” That is it. A quarter of an hour on the pitch at the old Stadion Oosterpark. Yet, in the meticulous archives of the football club, those fifteen minutes grant him immortality. He is forever an official first-team player for the Pride of the North.

This tiny tribute captures the harsh, beautiful reality of professional sports. For every superstar who plays 500 matches, there are dozens of local boys who train their entire youth for a single, fleeting moment under the stadium lights. To be remembered and celebrated by the club 31 years later for a 15-minute cameo is a testament to the deep respect the organization has for anyone who has ever worn the shirt in an official capacity.

A Look into the Future

In the hyper-documented football world of 2026, a young player making a 15-minute debut has their every touch analyzed on social media, their statistics logged on dozens of websites, and their highlights clipped on YouTube. In 1982, a debut was ephemeral—if you weren’t in the stadium, you missed it. The fact that printed matchday programmes continued to honor these “one-hit wonders” decades later is exactly why physical archives are so vital. They ensure that the men who built the club’s history, even just for fifteen minutes, are never forgotten.
