The Veteran Translator: Andraž Kirm’s Sacrifices for the Squad

In a young, developing squad, the role of a 29-year-old international is often just as important off the pitch as it is on it. In the March 2014 matchday programme against Vitesse, Slovenian winger Andraž Kirm is featured as the “Hoofdrolspeler,” offering a mature, pragmatic look at his second season at FC Groningen.

Under the headline “Spannend tot de laatste wedstrijd” (Exciting until the last match), Kirm addresses the team’s recent slump, including the painful 0-2 defeat against Feyenoord. But the most fascinating part of the interview is his discussion of his own role. Kirm admits that his favorite position is on the left wing. However, that spot was currently occupied by the undisputed star of the season, Filip Kostić. “Everyone knows that the left side is my favorite side, but this season Filip Kostić is doing very well there,” Kirm says without a hint of bitterness. “Outside the pitch, Filip and I hang out together. If something needs to be arranged, I know it. Sometimes I help him translate things from the trainers.”

Kirm had essentially accepted a role as a right-winger and an unofficial translator/mentor for the younger Serbian star. He also touches upon the ongoing drama surrounding the Euroborg pitch, echoing the complaints of his manager and the opposing coach. “The pitch doesn’t help us either,” he notes. “At the back, you don’t want to take unnecessary risks and combining is now a lot harder.” It is an interview that showcases the quiet professionalism required to keep a dressing room united during a difficult phase of the season.

A Look into the Future

Andraž Kirm‘s unselfish attitude and willingness to adapt were crucial during this transitional season for FC Groningen. While Filip Kostić grabbed the headlines and eventually secured a massive transfer to the Bundesliga, Kirm provided the tactical balance and veteran leadership that allowed the younger players to thrive. Kirm left the club at the end of the 2013/2014 season, moving to Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus. He may not have been the most spectacular player to wear the green and white, but this interview proves he was exactly the kind of professional a developing squad desperately needed.
