Finding His Center: Johan Kappelhof’s Defensive Evolution

In football, a player’s career can completely change simply by shifting a few meters across the pitch. For 23-year-old Johan Kappelhof, the 2013/2014 season marked exactly this kind of transformation. Featured as the “Hoofdrolspeler” (Main Character) in the November 2013 matchday programme, Kappelhof discusses his permanent move from right-back to the heart of the FC Groningen defense.

“I have never made a secret of the fact that I have a preference for the center-back position,” the Amsterdam-born defender admits. Partnered with the Brazilian rock Eric Botteghin, Kappelhof found his true calling. “The cooperation with Eric is fine. The communication with the goalkeeper and the two full-backs is also getting better.” This new central pairing was the exact reason manager Erwin van de Looi was finally able to establish the defensive stability he had been searching for all autumn.

But the interview reveals more than just tactical adjustments; it shows Kappelhof emerging as a vocal locker-room leader. On page 17, he addresses a sensitive issue: the demanding Euroborg crowd. “I have a hard time when individuals within our team are whistled at,” he states firmly, defending his teammates against the notoriously critical home support. “Fortunately, the atmosphere this season is really good in Euroborg. We as a team go along with the ‘flow’ and the opponent is often impressed by it. By our play today, we have to get the public behind the team again.”

A Look into the Future

Johan Kappelhof‘s transition to center-back was a masterstroke. He became an absolute pillar of the FC Groningen defense, his calm distribution and intelligent positioning perfectly complementing Botteghin’s physical dominance. This partnership would ultimately lead the club to its historic KNVB Cup victory in 2015. Following his success in the north, Kappelhof took a unique career path, transferring to the United States to join the Chicago Fire in MLS. He spent several highly successful years in America, becoming a respected veteran defender, proving that the positional shift documented in this 2013 programme unlocked his true potential.
