A matchday programme cover is usually a straightforward affair: an action shot of a star player, the club crests, and the date. But for the November 23, 2014 edition against PSV, FC Groningen and their main sponsor, Essent, created a brilliant piece of visual storytelling that spanned both the front and back covers, centered entirely around local boy Hans Hateboer.
The front cover shows the finished product: a fierce, focused Hateboer in the iconic green-and-white striped Masita kit, ready to go to war against the league leaders. But flip the booklet over, and you are greeted by a completely different image. The back cover features a childhood photograph of a young, blonde Hateboer in an oversized academy shirt. The magenta text block below reads: “Hans Hateboer. Groen sinds 2006.” (Hans Hateboer. Green since 2006).

This advertisement is a masterclass in corporate sports marketing. Essent, a major energy company, cleverly aligned its corporate push for “green energy” with the “green” blood of the football club. The text explains that the club stimulates young talent, and Essent recognizes itself in that sustainable development, building a “green future” together. By using a kid from the nearby village of Beerta who had just broken into the first team, the corporate giant managed to tap directly into the deep, emotional well of northern pride. The synergy between the front and back covers tells a complete story: from a dreaming academy kid in 2006 to the pride of the North in 2014.
A Look into the Future
Looking back from 2026, this specific advertisement feels incredibly poignant. Hans Hateboer did not just fulfill the promise shown on these covers; he exceeded it exponentially. He left his boyhood club after winning the KNVB Cup, moving to Italy to become a Champions League regular and Europa League winner with Atalanta Bergamo, as well as a Dutch international. Meanwhile, the corporate landscape shifted. Essent eventually stepped down as the main shirt sponsor in 2017 after nearly two decades, making way for new companies. Yet, this 2014 back cover remains one of the most perfectly executed sponsor campaigns in the club’s history—a moment where corporate messaging and genuine local football romance perfectly aligned.
